King Cake

King Cake - The Home Bakery
Mardi Gras is Tuesday, February 13.
Available January 6 - February 13.

The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. A King Cake is an oval-shaped bakery delicacy, crossed between a coffee cake and a French pastry that is as rich in history and tradition as it is in flavor. Our King Cake includes a cream cheese filling, a light glaze, a plastic baby to be inserted by the recipient, and all of the trademark decorations--sugars (and beads) in the royal colors of purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (power)-- to honor the three kings who visited the Christ child on Epiphany, the 12th day after Christmas.

In the past such things as coins, beans, pecans, or peas were hidden in each King Cake. Today, a tiny plastic baby is the common prize. At a party, the King Cake is sliced and served. Each person looks to see if their piece contains the "baby." If so, then that person is named "King" for a day and bound by custom to host the next party and provide the King Cake.

Also known as King's Day, Mardi Gras has a moveable date and may occur on any Tuesday from February 3rd to March 9th. It is always the day before Ash Wednesday, and always falls 46 days before Easter.
